Beer Mugs vs. Beer Glasses.

Most beer drinkers tend to prefer the beer glass. It has quietly taken over the role of being the main beer receptacle that we have gotten used to when drinking in restaurants and bars the world over.

The beer glass does certainly have a number of benefits, including being clear so that you are able to bask in that golden glow of the delicious beer that you are drinking. Also, a glass somehow feels a little more substantial to hold, perhaps because it is heavier so therefore gives this impression.

There are however a number of drawbacks to the common beer glass. Most notably is that they pose a real danger from shattering after being dropped. Broken glass can be deadly to young children and babies, as well as causing nasty cuts and extreme discomfort when it gets imbedded into your skin.

Metal and plastic beer mugs pose no such danger. The metal beer mug used to be the way that all people would drink beer until the advent of the beer glass. Metal beer mugs offer a different drinking experience as they are normally lighter than the beer glass and have a different feel when held.

Other advantages of metal beer mugs is that they don’t condensate when you have cold beer inside, while most can also be used for coffee and tea as they don’t break when exposed to boiling water. Metal beer mugs are also often insulated and therefore help to keep your beer cooled for much longer too.

Editor’s Choice: Eco Vessel Double Barrel Insulated Beer/Coffee Mug

From the minute you set eyes on this mug’s classy beer barrel style design and take a sip of your cool beer, we are certain that you will fall in love with it. It comes in a range of different colors including brass, stainless steel, red, blue and black, meaning that you can get a color to suit nearly any occasion.

The design is insulated so can be used for cold drinks as well as hot ones, for which it comes with a removable slide open and close top to allow for easy drinking and to make sure none of your precious drink can spill.

It is a 17 Fl. Oz / 500 Ml mug, so will be able to happily hold a small cans worth of beer, or a medium sized coffee inside. It is made from stainless seal and has no BPA, No phthalates and no other potentially harmful chemicals, making this an all-round safe mug to drink from.

We loved this great mug from Eco Friendly, which is the best all round drinking mug we tried.

Cons

  • The base is a little too wide to fit into many standard sized cup holders.

Set of 2 Avito Stainless Steel 14 Oz Double Walled Insulated Coffee Beer Tea Mugs

If you are looking for a simple, but elegant beer mug then this is definitely it. Its curved stainless steel design with handle is suitable for both hot and cold drinks, while not containing any nasty chemicals.

It is a 14 Oz mug, so is ideal size to hold a small can’s worth of beer or whatever other drink you choose. We found that the insulated design worked really well at keeping our beverages at their preferred temperatures for much longer too.

This best-selling design is a real hit with its customers, scoring extremely highly in in most of the feedback it has gotten. Once you lay your hands on it, you won’t have any problem understanding why either. It is really made to a high standard and definitely feels like it will last for many years, even with the heaviest usage.

Cons

  • Thermal design is not as good at keeping hot beverages warm and features no top.

StainlessLUX 73211 Brilliant Double-walled Stainless Steel Large Beer Mug

This stainless steel beer mug is so reflective it is almost like a mirror. A more classical mug design, it features a double wall to help keep your beverage insulated better.

Though we personally favor the 14 oz mug, this 13 oz one will still hold most of a small can of beer without much problem. It is rugged and durable while still looking the part. We found this mug nice and simple to clean, though a few of our drinkers did pick up a slight metal smell after drinking from it.

This is an extremely well made mug that will definitely give you years of loyal service without letting you down. To back this up, the company is offering a year’s free guarantee that should the worst happen and it breaks, that they will replace the mug at no extra charge.

Cons

  • Gives off a slight metallic smell

Handmade Beer Mug Set of 6 Wood Natural Stainless Steel Cup

If the competition had been down to looks alone, then without question these are the mug that we would have chosen. Styled in the classical wood barrel style, these mugs are hand made from real wood to give them an air of respectability that few other mugs can hope to match.

We loved the wood finish, which we also found to be a superb insulator that kept our beers really cold and our coffees really hot. To help make these cups last longer and to ensure they are waterproof, the designers have added a stainless steel inlay inside of the wooden one.

This mug holds an impressive 20.28 ounces, meaning that it will hold a large can’s worth of beer, so you won’t have to head back and forth to the kitchen for a refill too often.

Cons:

  • Made from real oak, therefore not the most environmentally friendly

Top Beer Mugs for the Money

Beer mugs are a really great way to drink your beer. Not only to they keep it colder for longer than beer glasses, but they also allow you to use them for hot beverages too.

As you have seen from this list, the image of the unappealing beer mug that is only used by old men is long gone. Today, beer mugs come in some great designs that are really appealing to young and old alike.

Though they might not get their old place back as the most popular beer receptacle, beer mugs can still take a pride of place in your home or be used for other social gatherings as they actually have a lot more to offer than the beer glass.

Why are some beer mugs dimpled?

The origin of the dimpled mug is not actually known. Though gaining fame for becoming ale glasses in the period between 1920 and the late 1980’s, there is evidence of dimpled mugs being used in Germany for more than 100 years now.

Though the dimpled mug doesn’t actually have any real special advantage, some people do swear that dimples add much needed grip to the glass, which is obviously a benefit.

There are lots of theories as to the origin of the design, they range from the eye raising to the absurd. A personal favorite is that the dimple mug was designed to look like the modern pineapple shaped grenade, which unfortunately for this theory, wasn’t even invented for decades after the first dimpled mug.

The only thing we can really be sure of about dimpled mugs is that they have become associated with drinking ale and stouts rather than with larger. As a result, their use has declined in countries such as England over the past few decades along with the number of ale drinkers there.

Can you freeze beer mugs?

It is indeed possible to freeze most different kinds of beer mugs, though you need to make sure that your design is suitable to be frozen.

Metal, glass and porcelain can all be frozen without causing any damage. Metal and porcelain can withstand rapid changes of temperature, such as pouring boiling water into them, whereas glass cannot. So please do not take a frozen glass beer mug out of the freezer and pour any very warm liquid into it as it will shatter.

You should also make sure that you do not fill any screw cap beer mug to the brim before putting it into the freezer as when they liquid expands it will cause a pressure related explosion and destroy your beer mug.

Beer mugs that are not suitable for freezing usually say so on their packaging. So, if it says don’t freeze then don’t freeze.

How big are beer mugs?

This question is kind of like asking how long is a piece of string. Beer mugs come in all shapes and sizes, and though most are aimed at more standard drinking measurements, we have over the years seen some tiny mugs and some enormous ones too.

Most beer mugs will generally be between 15 and 20 Fl. Oz. This means that the smaller mugs will be able to hold a small cans worth of beer, while the larger ones a large can worth of beer.

We recommend that you check the product listing prior to buying it to make sure that it holds the amount of beer you desire. Some people prefer smaller mugs as they are drinking smaller amounts of beer in one go, meaning that it stays fresher and cooler, while others prefer a large drink so they don’t need to go back and forth to the fridge to get more beer all the time.
