Beer makes for a great drink. Interestingly enough, it also makes for a great conditioner for the hair. Known to soften and add shine, beer shampoo is a great favorite among consumers who after trying several brands share almost the same opinions.

As an experiment, we decided to review some of these most popular brands available in the market while closely examining the benefits each of these products professes to have. Do they really have conditioning and hair toning properties or are they just a marketing gimmick.

Why We Love Beer Shampoo

Let’s start by talking about what beer shampoo is exactly. One of the most popular beverages in the world, beer is prepared in several different forms, from ales to lagers to pilsners. It now also comes in the form of a shampoo.

With beer as one of the key ingredients, this product can be purchased commercially or even made at home.

Commercially, it comes in several forms including liquid, gel, as a bar and even as a water solvent powder.  The basic composition of all of the above forms, however, remains the same and they tend to have similar effects on usage.  Choosing one or the other form is a purely personal preference.

The shampoo is used in the same manner as any other regular shampoo where a small amount is applied to the scalp and worked all through the hair and then rinsed.

Beer shampoo is known to be beneficial as it assists in improving the lustre and quality of hair along with controlling a dry scalp and dandruff.  The cosmetic elements in the shampoo are designed to clean hair and to also strengthen and improve the quality of hair.

Make at home

Popularly, beer shampoo can also be made at home as it is a relatively simple process. The process involves using a beer of your choice, a flat dish pan, a stove and any generic shampoo of your choice.

The beer goes into the pan first to reduce the water volume and to retain all of the beneficial material. Once reduced to a dark thick substance, the mixture is then added to the shampoo in the bottle.

To create an even mixture, the solution is shaken thoroughly before it is ready to be used just like any other regular shampoo.

Beer can also be added to conditioners in the same fashion as well. Other than being a homemade shampoo, commercially available beer can also be used as a rinse.  When used in this manner, the beer is opened and allowed to go flat first. The basic compounds found in beer are almost similar and therefore it does not matter what type of beer you choose to make homemade shampoo or even for a simple rinse.

Benefits of beer shampoo

Beer is used in several different forms. Raw beer was often used as an antiseptic on small cuts and bruises in olden times.

In terms of the shampoo, it has been proven that shampoo infused beer works better than ordinary shampoo – the primary reason being that the alcohol present in the beer helps as a cleansing and shine agent.  Used particularly to enhance hair growth, beer infused shampoo is excellent for healthy hair that isn’t too dry or dull. In addition to this it also makes hair soft, less frizzy or messy.

When used over a period of time, beer shampoo helps improve the lustre and quality of hair. For those that have a dry scalp, beer shampoo helps control it and also assists in the removal of dandruff. Due to its alcoholic properties, beer shampoo works as a cleanser to the scalp. Beer contains a sufficient amount of proteins and vitamins which is also helpful in strengthening and smoothing hair and improving its overall quality.

In addition to nourishing and smoothing hair to strengthen it, it adds a lot of natural shine and makes hair manageable within a few weeks.

Is beer really good for your hair?

Besides drinking, beer has also been used to bathe with, cook with and also fertilize grass with. But is it really good for the hair? Due to the fact that malts and hops are packed with protein, beer does have the ability to strengthen hair cuticles.

Cuticles comprise of a layer of dead cells that rest on the outermost part of the hair shaft. Damaged cuticles produce rough and raised cells. The proteins found in beer help realign these cuticles in an orderly fashion.

If you are among those that regularly colors, curls, straightens or blow dries their hair, there is a strong chance that you hair lacks the protein it needs. On using a good beer shampoo for a few weeks, however, you will notice a smoothed texture that sort of reflects light – this is basically the proteins binding with the cuticles making your hair shinier. This is also due to the B vitamins and natural sugars found in the alcohol in the beer.

There are plenty of commercial beer shampoos available on the market. Here, we have reviewed some of the most popular ones for your benefit.

Duffy’s Brew Premium IPA Craft Beer Shampoo

Duffy's Brew Premium IPA Craft Beer Shampoo Review
We reviewed Duffy’s Brew Premium
IPA Craft Beer shampoo for a period of over two weeks and straight off the bat we can confidently say that it certainly made our hair super soft while giving it a beautiful shine.  A steep warning for all beer lovers is also seen on the package of the bottle which we found hilarious and worth mentioning – ‘Beer tastes good. Beer shampoo doesn’t. Don’t drink me!’

The product smells very close to the actual smell of beer and some users also say that it has a bit of a yeasty smell to it as well. However, after using the product your hair will not smell like beer so you shouldn’t be worried of any foul after-smell.

On pouring the liquid on to your palm you will notice it to be very thick. Also, it does not create plenty of lather as it is free from sulphate, parabens and phthalate. The product is not tested on animals which is another plus. The same goes for the conditioner as well– it is thicker than the shampoo and we struggled to get it out of the bottle. We actually had to get the whole cap off before we could use it.

After a few weeks of use, however, we noticed that Duffy’s Brew Premium IPA Craft Beer Shampoo did add plenty of volume and shine to the hair. It is a nice product to use occasionally especially to help remove product build-up from regular shampoo.

Redken Clean Brew Extra Cleansing Shampoo for Men

Redken Clean Brew Extra Cleansing Shampoo for Men Review
Many women have positively reviewed how beer shampoo has made their hair soft and shiny. And although many of the beer shampoos available are unisex products, the Redken Clean Brew Extra Cleansing Shampoo is exclusively made for men.

With anti-grit technology that features three common ingredients found in beer namely, malt, brewer’s yeast and orange zest as the main composition of the product, Redken Clean Brew Extra Cleansing Shampoo for Men was found to help keep the scalp dry and clean from styling product build-up and excess oil.

The bottle is packaged in an 8.5 oz bottle resembling the shape of a beer bottle. On use for over a period of two weeks, we found hair to be much healthier as the shampoo worked well to get rid of excess oil and build-up from styling products. The shampoo, however, does not have any conditioning abilities so make sure that you use a good conditioner after each use.

Real Beer Shampoo Bar from Tasmania Australia 100% Natural

Real Beer Shampoo Bar from Tasmania Australia 100% NaturalWe tested this product due to the many positive reviews it has received on Amazon.

The Real Beer Shampoo Bar consists of very interesting ingredients such as Tasmanian Beer, Mount Wellington Spring Water, oils from coconuts, olives and castor. The other ingredients that are used are also organic and the company claims the product is 100% chemical free.

This shampoo can be used regularly on all types of hair and is silicon free. The bar lathers up nicely when used giving away a nice spicy gingery scent. You have to be a bit careful not to get any lather into your eyes as it can sting a lot.

On rinsing the lather off, the texture of the hair feels squeaky clean like it does after rising with soap (and  unlike the usual feeling for a liquid shampoo). We tried on the conditioner next, which comprised of ingredients like rapeseed, macadamia, rice bran oils, mango butter and beer and we must say that the hair feels much softer too.

After using it for a period of two weeks, we found it to keep the scalp dandruff free and the hair much softer, definitely a visible difference from regular shampoo. This shampoo must be used along with the conditioner as it helps smoothen and soften the hair after the shampoo is applied on.

Beer Soap (IPA) Swag Brewery

Beer Soap (IPA) Swag BreweryA highly popular product on Amazon in the Beer Shampoos and Soaps category, the Beer Soap is for those that need another reason to add beer to their daily routine. That would be one way of looking at it. The other is the awesomeness of the soap itself.

Available in six different aromas, each is made from a different brew thus producing a different scent. Besides the variety of brew, the soaps are also available in aromas such as spicy, roasts and fruity depending on the variety of soap.

The beer is a nice treatment for the skin as beer has plenty of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and amino acids which is helpful for soft skin. The soap can be used as an everyday hand soap and a body soap.

It has plenty of promising reviews on Amazon with as many as over 73% of the people that tried the product giving it a 5 star rating. It is priced at $29.90 and weighs 3.2 ounces.

Park Avenue Damage Free Hair Beer Shampoo Made From Real Bear 350ml

Park Avenue Damage Free Hair Beer Shampoo Made From Real Bear 350ml

Packaged in the shape of a beer bottle (it’s just a little smaller than a regular pint), the Park Avenue Beer shampoo is a unisex product that is formulated using real beer to ensure that your lovely locks get the best of care.

The shampoo lathers well and has a fairly thick texture to it. It does a through clean up of scalp as it nourishes and smoothens the hair while strengthening the strands in the process and adding real volume.

Although it does not have a nice smell to it, the shampoo easily dissolves after a rinse. We would recommend pairing this shampoo with a perfumed conditioner if the smell bothers you.

After trying out the shampoo for a couple of weeks we can safely say that it fulfils its claims as it does add plenty of shine and volume to hair. We also noticed that it also took care of any residual dandruff without leading to dry hair.

A small drawback we noticed was that the bottle cap wasn’t seal proof which caused it to leak easily… this may not be a handy shampoo to carry if you are travelling. That being said, it does work effectively to improve volume and texture of hair although it has very little effect on reducing hair fall.
